History of Princess Diana

She was known as “The People’s Princess,” due to her relatable, human quality. Diana, Princess of Wales, (formerly Lady Diana Frances Spencer), was born on July 1st, 1961. She was known for her beauty, being shy, having charisma, and being friendly to the common people. She was active in charity work for children, the elderly, AIDs patients, cancer patients, and more. In 1981, it was announced that Lady Diana was to be married to The Prince of Wales, which would change her title to Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales. In fact, many of Princess Diana’s stamps feature the royal wedding that took place in 1981.

Princess Diana tragically died in 1997 due to severe injuries sustained in a car crash while she was in Paris. Her sudden death led to global public mourning and media attention around the world. In the years and decades following her passing, many of the postage stamps issued since 1998 have commemorated and celebrated her life. When the first set of five Princess Diana stamps went on sale on February 3rd, 1998, the proceeds went to her charities. Each one of the stamps each featured a different photo of the princess.
